Can you tell us a little about the genesis of Prakruti Renewable Power Private Limited?
Prakruti Renewable Power Provate Limited (PRPPL) started as a partnership firm in the year 2006 with the objective of design, development, manufacture and sale of Pico and micro hydro systems. The intent was to develop a custom - standardised product for the sector which could be deployed quickly and would provide reliable power at remote location. The partnership firm was converted to a private limited company in 2011.
What is the business model you follow?
The company has presence in 4 states directly : Karnataka, Kerala, Uttarakhand and Himachal. In Karnataka we operate through an exclusive dealer and in the other states the company operated directly. There are two types of products, the pico hydro systems which are used for power generation and in recent times some mechanical applications like grinding & the microhydro products that are used for power generation. We sell to the final customer in all cases. There is a subsidy for pico hydro systems.
Can you tell us a little bit about pico hydro technology?
Pico hydro technology involves use of water for power generation. Water coming down a slope has energy. If this water is collected and transmitted through a pipe and connected to a hydro turbine at the end power is generated. We have provided solutions for water coming down from about 5 m to upto 70 m. There are different types of turbines for different head and flow and we provide solutions that are required for a site. We have systems from about 100 W to 50 kW.
How have you addressed the issues of end user and enterprise financing?
The company has been financed by the promoters and through an overdraft facility from the Syndicate Bank under the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) scheme. The User financing has been organized only in Karnataka at present this is done through credit corporative societies.
How has the work of PRPPL evolved over the years? What are the highlights?
The company was primarily a Karnataka focussed till about 2013. In the last 2 years the company has started working newer geographies. A large part of the business of the company is subsidy driven. We are focussing new product portfolio, markets and business models which would enable us to move into non subsidy sectors.
PRPPL was given an Award by Millennium Alliance ( www.millenniumalliance.in) in 2014 for Pico hydro for lighting in hilly areas.
What are your plans for the future?
The company is looking to grow across all states in India by 2016 and tap international markets by 2017.
Finally, what role do you expect CLEAN to play in the work you are undertaking?
Pico and micro hydro require significant policy support for growth. Where the resource is available Picohydro and microhydro solutions are costs effective and highly reliable. We expect CLEAN would provide us access for pushing such interventions.
